About the Cabinet


OU Research pastMission

The University Research Cabinet serves as a consistent, continuing and timely mechanism to enable the leadership of all three campuses to collaboratively facilitate research excellence and productivity, particularly in those instances in which multi-campus participation results in an institutional value and competitive advantage for the University.

Values

The Research Cabinet recognizes and balances the distinctive interests of all three campuses, respects and supports the research administration on each campus, ensures that communication is complete and forthcoming, and invests in the success of the University of Oklahoma as its highest priority.

Vision

The Research Cabinet serves as a trusted, innovative, timely and effective organization to foster University-wide research without adding administrative burden.

Goals

  1. To advise the president on all aspects of the University’s research program
  2. To identify applicable best practices of outstanding research organizations and universities from throughout the world
  3. To build mutually beneficial research relationships with other academic institutions and with government and private sector partners
  4. To share information about current trends and anticipated future directions of funding agencies and potential public and private partners
  5. To recommend actions to strengthen and promote the university’s multi-campus learning, discovery, application and innovation

 

Strategy


Objective

To create significant1 research projects that have intrinsic value and that promote the success, impact and stature of the University.

Scope

The primary focus of the Research Cabinet is on research involving two or more campuses.

Advantage

To facilitate and expedite research (in the broadest sense) by bringing together on a timely schedule the University’s strongest combination of human and other resources, to minimize barriers between and among campuses, and to collectively promote the University’s research success and excellence.

Procedures

The Research Cabinet meets quarterly to discuss the university’s research agenda. Five members of the Research Cabinet comprise the Research Cabinet Operating Committee which meets bi-weekly to manage the continuing flow of research topics.

The Operating Committee organizes issues before actions are considered by the Research Cabinet.

Score Card

The Research Cabinet uses the following measures to assess its success and to adjust its strategy:

  • Number of significant1 University proposals and funding successes
  • Number of significant research projects assisted by the Research Cabinet
  • Number of instances in which the Research Cabinet provides information or services to the University research community
  • Number of cases in which the Research Cabinet effectively responds to requests for assistance from one or more campuses       

 


  1. Significant in this context is interpreted as proposals that are large, require extensive commitment of University resources, involve partners with special relationships with the President or the University, those that begin small but are likely to grow much larger, those involving multiple public and/or private partners, those with high visibility or are controversial, or those involving multiple campuses.
